Tom Brokaw is giving him shit for it, too. Typical.
So, why do they let the mentally challenged further their education? I may sound heartless or whatever, but I’m genuinely curious as to why there’s hoardes of them at my community college. It’s not like there are tons and tons of them holding down serious jobs. And if they are, ew. Would you really hire someone missing a chromosome as your lawyer, or even let yourself get pulled over by a cop with downs? I doubt it. So why are they there?

couple reasons.
-in most instances, they’re there not to take English and Bio classes, but rather self-sufficiency classes (depending on how bad their disability is, they can learn how to do basic, everyday tasks with the goal of being self-sufficient to a certain capacity) and vocational classes (again, depending on their disability, they might be able to work some vocation).
-a lot of parents of the disabled have to work in the daytime, and having them attend these classes at community colleges is an inexpensive way for them to have someone look after their child and their needs while they’re at work. private nurses or staying at home permanently to look after somebody costs a lot of money.
you have to remember that there’s an emphasis on the “community” in community college. it’s not just there for people to transfer to universities. it’s also used to help the community in varying capacities.
this was my little NBC “the more you know” moment of the day.
